Project Title
The Art of the Olympics
Type
Book Design / Senior Capstone Project
Date
Fall 2024
Overview
This 60-page editorial book was created as a senior capstone project, inspired by the 99% Invisible podcast episode “The Art of the Olympics.” I translated the podcast’s audio into a dynamic print piece exploring the connection between design and politics at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
The book is designed in three sections: Logo Identity, The Tlatelolco Massacre, and Metro Design, each opening with a gatefold spread. I used bold imagery and vibrant colors to illustrate how cultural identity and political unrest influenced the Olympic visual system.
I researched the Mexico ’68 logo, protest posters from the Tlatelolco Massacre, and Mexico City’s logo systems to create a historically accurate design. I was intentional in ensuring the book carefully reflects the content and tone of the podcast.
Scope of Work
– Research and transcription of podcast audio
– Editorial layout and grid development
– Page design and typesetting
– Gatefold spread creation
– Integration of archival images and original graphics
– Print preparation
Outcome
A visually engaging editorial book that brings a podcast episode to life through thoughtful design. This project strengthened my skills in research, editorial layout, and turning audio content into print format.
